What is a Routine Eye Exam?

Chances are, you’ve had a routine eye exam (and if you haven’t, it might be time to make an appointment). But even if you have had a routine eye exam, you may not know how a routine exam is different from other exams, such as comprehensive eye exams, vision screenings, or medical eye exams. So, what is a routine eye exam?

What is a Routine Eye Exam?

Routine eye exams are done with the intention of finding out if you are suffering from any form of vision impairment. This includes refractive errors such as myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and more. This type of impairment occurs when the eye does not reflect light normally or properly, causing things to appear blurry or distorted. Individuals with these conditions may find it difficult to focus on the object that they’re looking at and experience other symptoms such as headaches, eye strain, and glare.

During a routine exam, your doctor will evaluate your vision at different distances and determine a treatment plan, which includes whether or not glasses or contacts are needed. If glasses or contacts are needed, your eye doctor will find the prescription that is right for you and begin the process of getting you set up with corrective eyewear.

Once your prescription has been determined, you will be asked to choose between glasses or contacts. Your eye doctor may give recommendations based on your specific condition. If you select glasses, you have an additional set of choices to make such as what lenses or frames you want. If contacts are chosen, you will be given recommendations on which contacts will work for you and will undergo a contact lens fitting.

Overall, routine eye exams are meant to be quick and easy and are usually done in around 30 minutes.
