How Often Should You Get an Eye Exam

Did you know that your brain is able to compensate for and accommodate vision loss? Unless you encounter sudden vision loss, then fading vision will likely be undetectable, even though it’s time for an updated glasses or contacts prescription. This is why it is so important to schedule a regular comprehensive eye exam, preferably every 2 years. However, there are some different or additional recommendations based on other factors such as age.

Recommendations Based On Age

Children (Aged 6 months to 20 years)

Eyecare should start as early as 6 months old, especially if signs of vision loss are noticed. In addition, children should have a comprehensive eye exam prior to starting pre-school or kindergarten. Because children absorb so much information visually, making sure to monitor for vision loss symptoms and have regular eye exams is quite important. A child who wears glasses should have an exam every 6 months to a year while a child who does not have glasses should get an eye exam every 2 years.

Young Adults (Aged 20-39)

Adults in this age category should have their eyes checked at least once every 2 years. During this span of life, the chance of rapid or sudden vision loss increases. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. A young adult who already wears glasses or contacts should get their eyes checked more often.

Adults (Aged 40-64)

The eyes undergo many changes in this phase of adulthood. In this stage, not only does presbyopia begin to develop, but it is also the time in which many adults start to develop health conditions that contribute to vision loss. Because of the number of changes, it is recommended that a comprehensive eye exam is performed every 1-2 years.

Seniors (Aged 65+)

Seniors are recommended to have a comprehensive eye exam every year. There are a number of risk factors for seniors or health conditions that lead to vision issues. As a result, seniors need to take special care of their eyes by prioritizing regular eye exams.
