Eye Care Tips and Tricks

Eyecare is an incredibly important part of your overall health. Not only is it important for protecting your vision but it is also important for protecting the rest of your body as well. While many people do not have their eye care as a priority, whether due to eye care cost or other reasons, this is not recommended as even the smallest of eye injuries or conditions can lead to lifelong issues. Luckily, there are many ways to take care of your eyes on your own. Here are some of the best eye care tips and tricks to protect your eyes.

  • Eating healthy – A well-balanced diet can do wonders for your eyes. Utilizing a diet that contains yellow and green vegetables, as well as fruit and omega-3 fish such as salmon, tuna, and halibut can greatly reduce your risk of eye conditions.

  • Weight – Struggling with obesity or being overweight can cause you to have a risk of diabetes and other conditions. These conditions are associated with a higher risk for diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Talk with your doctor to learn how to take steps to maintain a healthy weight.

  • Exercise – Getting consistent exercise has been linked to a decrease in blood pressure, the risk of diabetes, and high cholesterol. Individuals with these conditions are at higher risk for vision problems, so taking preventative action by exercising regularly can be a great way to protect your vision.

  • Sunglasses – Harmful rays from the sun can damage your eyes and cause conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Luckily sunglasses block nearly 100% of UV radiation and can be a great way to protect your eyes.

  • Protective eyewear – Eye injuries are most common in sports and on the job. Wearing protective goggles or eyewear can keep you safe and protect yourself from an eye injury.

  • Smoking – Smoking increases your risk for a wide variety of ailments. This includes eye diseases such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

  • Family history – Some conditions can be passed down hereditarily. Make sure you know if any of your family members have had any of these conditions, so you may determine your risk for developing these vision-related diseases.

  • Risk Factors – Age is the most common significant factor related to the risk of eye conditions, however, it is important to talk with your eye doctor about other behaviors that may be increasing your risk.

  • Prevent contact-related infections – If you wear contacts, make sure to wash your hands before taking them in and out and follow proper procedures, when cleaning your contacts. Wearing your contacts for longer than prescribed can also increase the risk of infection.

  • Avoiding eye strain – If you use the computer a lot, it is common to forget to blink your eyes enough. To keep your eyes from staring so hard, use what is known as the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away, for 20 seconds.
